What is a Mala?

Malas are extremely trendy right now, from Yogis to a fashion statement.

The mala holds so much more power than that, in Hindu and Buddhist tradition they are used for mantra meditation. As you repeat the same word or phrase over and over, you begin to quiet and settle the mind.

The reason why the mala is 108 beads is because 108 is a sacred number.

• There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has a masculine and a feminine. 54x2=108.
• In astrology, there are 12 house + 9 planets. 12 x 9=108.
• The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the earth.
• There are 540 doors to Valhalla in Nordic mythology. 540/5=108

List continues.

Malas are always 108 beads plus one Guru bead or charm, this symbolizes the completion of the cycle that brings the Mantras in to being. Thank the mala for the space, those who came before you, those assisting you on your path and those who will follow after.
